Real stories from real families
Enid not only helped my son build reading and writing skills, but she also helped him rebuild the confidence he lost through his years of struggle...
After countless tutors, two years in a private school for students with dyslexia, and so much struggle, my son was still reading and writing several grade levels behind. Once he started working with Enid, he surprised himself with his progress and did not look back. With one summer of intensive tutoring (4 times per week), and one semester of tutoring (2 to 3 times per week), he tested ABOVE grade level in reading and writing and he made the honor roll for the first time.
His reading and writing are still challenging, but now he knows he can meet those challenges. Most amazing to me is that my son no longer talks poorly about himself. He talks about future careers and future achievements that he never would have considered a year ago. It’s like a weight has been lifted off of his shoulders. He laughs and seems joyful again. Enid helped my son break through to access reading and writing. With those skills, he has the confidence to see and work towards a very bright future.
My third-grade son was hiding in the bathroom during reading and writing time in class. Writing assignments were stress-filled battles with tears...
He was assessed with dysgraphia and tested in the lowest levels in writing. We were lucky to start tutoring with Enid and the change has been dramatic. We had him work with Enid over the summer (3 times per week). When 4th grade started, my son had a completely different attitude about writing. His teacher tells us he completes his work without any trouble and she is surprised that he has an IEP.
While it is still not his favorite subject, he now says writing a paragraph is not a big deal. A kid that used to tell me he didn’t need to learn how to write, now tells me he wants to try to get into the competitive IB program for middle school. We’ve had to pause tutoring during the school year due to time constraints, and my son was very disappointed, he asked, “Can we start again in the summer?” From tears to asking for tutoring in the summer. Enid helped my son see his potential and open up to writing.
You’ve helped both boys so much. I know you’ll keep helping other kiddos as well. But... please let us know when you open up your summer schedule. Both boys will want to keep up their progress!
I must say, that after a year with my eight year old son working with Enid on classic dyslexic issues, she has not just been the first one to identify what needs growth and addressing, but she has tapped into his very soul...
My son is excited every time I say “Enid is on the computer now to talk to you,” and he races at the computer like a buddy is waiting there for him. Now, I recede in the background and they work through exercises, and I hear them laughing and talking, and what is so very Enid... She says often, when he comes up with something which is perhaps imaginative but not quite the right answer, “I love that.” And he feels proud as she directs him into a new way of looking at the cool answer he came up with.
Enid has straight up put the skip back in my son’s step with language by first restoring his confidence. I don’t know her whole plan... but she has so tapped into the total-child that I actually don’t think he is aware that it is about dyslexia or a learning disability. She takes the “dis” out of disability and gets a young soul to just explore with a trusted cool adult their innate abilities.
As a parent, I have cried often with gratitude. Two times now, she has been in the school district meetings on speaker phone, and all I can say is that she is one heck of a “Fierce Angel” as I have now named her. I had no idea what the district was required to do with him and wasn’t; I had no idea that the social/behavioral issues that often come from a kiddo feeling so demoted can result in playground issues... I sat there, and instead of being the “bad cop” parent, advocating for my kid but not really knowing what educational laws were protecting him, I got to sit back and offer cookies and be just the kind and concerned parent.
I was so very thrilled that after the first SST district meeting that while it started out with the Principal and teacher being very smug and defensive, that at the end of the meeting, both their hair was literally messed up... Like this amazing wind of get-your-stuff-straight had blown in and taken them off their blocks of defense into actually what is legally allowed our son.
Because of Enid, there is a very clear plan of both academic screening and also social observation required... and I didn’t have to be the tough one. Enid got it done: smiling, tough, graceful. I got a view into the future that my son will be just fine, more than fine, that he can expand in his abilities, and be whoever his desires and talents and dreams take him. The tears I shed were for that moment I suddenly felt freedom broken open... from us both struggling alone in a system we don’t understand, to a wide open plain...
Enid, pure and simple, has advocated for my son and for parents more than I could ever imagine possible. And the whole time, being a happy tutor treat in his week. I wish only, with nostalgic regret, that my husband and my sister and so many others I know could have had her loving instruction when their dreams of being an astronaut or a writer were thwarted by oversight, lack of understanding the dramatic differences in their brains of brilliance and challenge, and that it only takes one person to see, to really SEE the whole child. We all need a Fierce Angel...
Thanks is a pale word for what you give, Enid.
Enid was the first of the teachers that went out of her way to really know my son. Not only that, she went out of her way to know me, and what I wanted, my quirks, and what my hot buttons were...
And believe me, that’s not easy. Prior to Enid, my son had two previous teachers that I rarely spoke to, one I never saw, and usually cancelled on me if we did have a meeting, but most importantly, I saw little to no improvement in my son’s speech in those years. It was very frustrating.
Enid started just when I was really worrying about my son as his speech was parallel his poor academics. Enid and his classroom teacher worked together in his 2nd grade year and created a plan that literally changed his life. Here we are today, meeting in his third grade year with my son being released from speech. The first weeks of 2nd grade, he was almost unintelligible except to those who spoke with him all the time. Now, academically, he is on top, a leader in his class and most relevant, no speech issues.
I cannot let this opportunity pass to express my gratitude for Enid and her effort. Her effective and consistent communication, willingness to involve me in the process, and ability to engage my son were keys to this process that prior to her arrival did not exist and clearly in my opinion linked to my son’s lack of progress before. My son is in his words “bummed” he won’t be in speech any more. I am in my words, grateful, but will miss her updates too. I do hope the district appreciates the gem this professional is and knows that her services are way beyond the paperwork and acronyms.
I highly recommend Enid Webb. She was able to work with my son and really pinpoint what he needed. The best part is he really enjoyed working with her...
He never felt that it was extra work or boring. He looked forward to their appointments. Enid also helped shape his IEP with the school. She was such an asset in the meetings. Knowing what the school should and could be doing was invaluable. She had no problem calling them out and making suggestions that as a parent you just don’t know are available.
She was able to go through his IEP goals and really fine tune them in a direction of what my son really needed. She is a great resource and someone you want in your corner.
Enid Webb is truly amazing, she has increased my son’s reading level by 5 in a very short time. Not only that she has increased his confidence and desire to learn. His favorite subject now is writing, where as if you asked him this last year it was his worst. The improvement at school has even carried over into the dreaded Swun Math, he’s at grade level!
No one could figure out my son in 14 years, and Enid figured him out in 30 minutes.
Ms. Webb was our son’s first educational support to help us discover that even though he had more energy and curiosity than most people wanted to deal with, she let us know that he is very smart and that he was not just acting out...
He could be re-directed with special cues to change his thought process which would bring him out of his sometimes rage/anger. She let us know that he was showing signs of having Asperger’s Syndrome.
Ms. Webb would meet with him one on one to help him learn new ways to show his feelings and help him cope and communicate better with his peers and teachers so he could have a healthy relationship and make friends.
Our family moved to Oregon for my husband’s job. We not only left our family and friends, we also left behind a very precious person that helped us understand our son better.
